2007 Walk For Shea

Once again, the incredible support of such wonderful people made this annual event another huge success. We marked this anniversary date with wonderful weather, smiling faces, wagging tails and approx.600 people (and dogs) that turned out to help raise money for research for Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which has no cure to date. Once again, Shea stole the show while she led everyone from her wheelchair on a wonderful walk throughout our neighborhood. Our goal is that one of these years, Shea, herself is walking with us although she says "I'm fine the way I am"!! Thanks to your efforts and generosity, we raised over $20,000.00 (the amount is still climbing) for this worthy cause making the total raised to date almost $150,000.00. What an honor to be associated with a neighborhood with people who care so deeply. One hundred percent all money collected goes directly to research!

These events are successes because so many people help and I'd like to give them the recognition they deserve: Regina and John O'Shaughnessy, Andi & Bob Biagi, Phyllis Manning (who maintains our website), Catherine Conley, Lori Dennis, Karen Moore (you know why), Greg Richter, Ed Moore, Troy, Kelsey, Alex, Gabby & AJ Nieves. Thanks to Olivia McCarthy who made over 400 yellow ribbons for the participants to wear as a symbol to remember our armed forces overseas. Shea's grandfather provided wrist bands for all the participants that read "Walk for Shea and cure SMA".

Patrols & Flyer Distributors: JJ Chahine, Brian Piscarcik, Danny Evans, Gavin Seltzer, Tim McElaney, Alex Moore, Michael Rafferty, Olivia McCarthy

Finally, a huge thank you to our sponsors for their continual support: Virginia Bagel on Stone Road supplied the bagels for the hungry crowd (we just love them), and Giant at Centrewood Plaza donated apples and oranges. Very special thanks to First Horizon Home Loans, spearheaded by Vice President, Kevin Latham, who continues to be the biggest contributor for our cause each year. I also wanted to extend our appreciation for Kathy and Jeff Newman, owner's of the Glory Days Restaurant who helped us with our second fundraiser for the "Walk for Shea" on March 29th, 2007. Thanks to their generosity, we raised almost $2,400.00 in that one night. Finally, a big thank-you to Larry Bronstein and the Clifton Lion's Club for their donation to our cause.

Thanks again and I hope I see you all next year at the 11th Annual "Walk for Shea" scheduled for Sunday, April 27, 2008. Mark your calendars! God Bless you all!!

Before the 2005 Walk

For those of you that don't know me, I'm Shea Megale. Duh - this is my walk. I want to thank you all for giving money to SMA. This walk is not just for me but for all of us with SMA.

Even though I'm normal and can play football, video games, and fight with my brother and sister, there's lots of kids with SMA that can't do that.

Am I crazy but this walk keeps getting bigger and bigger!

I love you Aunt Mo and newsflash Mom/Dad - When there is a cure I'm not taking it. I like the way I am!

Let's Go!!!

Shea wrote a letter, a few years ago, to ask people to please donate money to help children with SMA. She wants the help for others, she is perfectly happy with the way she is and how her life is going but she knows others may not be.

She said:

"my name is shea , I can't walk. I'm perfectly capable of doing almost anything. When the nurses find that cure, I am not going to take it. That's why the "Walk For Shea" is really the "Walk for SMA." There is lots of kids with SMA that need more money for wheelchairs, and want a cure. So please give money to those families, because I'm PERFECT THE WAY I AM.

Thank you,

Shea"
